Some Ideas Never Get Old / by Linda MacNeil

From Ancient Egypt 2000 B.C. to Modern Day, Some Ideas Persist.

Mesh Series No. 122, 2009 • Pate de verre glass, Vitrolite glass, and gold-plated metal. 4 1/2 x 2 1/8 x 3/4 inches (11.4 x 5.4 x 1.9 cm). Private collection.

Interestingly, the scarab represented a potent symbol of creation and regeneration to the ancient Egyptians. Perhaps it is appropriate for it to evolve and reappear across time. My design uses polished opaque black and white Vitrolite in combination with an aqua blue accent. The form of the design is inspired by the scrarab beetle. Below are two examples from the Metropolitan Museum of Art Collection. The first is a highly polished scarab beetle illustrating where the inspiration for form came from and the other is a pendant using black and white glass with a blue accent. Although the latter was not part of my inspiration, it does illustrate how ideas can persist over time.
